Have you been told that you need to get braces? This is a big change and you probably have a lot of questions that your orthodontist can answer. Here are a few of the most common ones.
Why do I need braces?
Braces are used to fix an uneven bite, crooked/crowded teeth, or teeth that are spaced too far apart.
How do braces work?
Braces work using pressure. They are tightened and adjusted by your orthodontist periodically, which helps the tooth and tooth socket adapt closer to a better spot.
Can I use invisible aligners instead of traditional braces?
If your bite isn’t too bad, then removable, invisible aligners may be a possibility. However, for more severe dental problems, traditional or lingual braces may be necessary.
Are braces painful?
Braces are much more comfortable today than they used to be. Your mouth may feel a little sore after your orthodontist tightens them, but besides that, they shouldn’t hurt.
How can braces benefit my health?
When your bite is aligned correctly with braces, you are preventing gum disease, jaw problems, affected chewing and speech, and tooth decay, wear, and loss.
Can I still eat the same foods while wearing braces?
Those with traditional braces need to avoid whole apples, popcorn, and sticky foods. These foods get stuck more easily in your braces. Avoiding sugary treats is also advised to prevent plaque from growing around the brackets.
