A filling really is nothing more than a way to restore a tooth that has been damaged from decay. At James D. Schuette. DDS., Dr. Schuette will remove the decayed tooth material, clean the area and fill in the space with filling material. By doing this, the tooth will be restored to its proper shape and function, and bacteria will be prevented from getting into that space and causing more damage.
There are four types of fillings: gold, amalgam, composite and porcelain. Gold fillings are made to order in a lab and cemented into the tooth. Gums react well with gold fillings and they have been known to last for 20 years. They are more expensive than other types of fillings. Amalgam, or silver fillings are less expensive than gold and are long-lasting, but they are darker in appearance. Composite resin fillings can be matched to your tooth color. They are mixed and put directly into the cavity and harden in place. However, they can chip and wear out over time and may become stained. Porcelain fillings are made in a lab like gold fillings. They can also be matched to tooth color, and will resist staining.
Only a dentist can detect when and where you will need a filling and that will happen during an office visit. Dr. Schuette has several ways to detect cavities, and will be happy to discuss your options with you. The best way to keep from having to have that discussion with your dentist is to practice good dental hygiene and to visit your dentist regularly for a checkup and cleaning.
