You probably know that replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant can help your pearly whites. Implants can restore your smile and help you chew comfortably again. Furthermore, implants are extremely durable. In fact, they can last twenty or more years. However, if you’re interested in preserving the life of your implants, there are a few things you’ll need to do.
When your implant is placed, you may experience pain, swelling, and bruising. Until this pain subsides, we recommend eating cold foods and drinks. You should also avoid touching your implant site since this can cause infection. Of course, you’ll also be given other instructions to follow at your appointment.
Still, there are a few other things you’ll need to avoid doing once your implant is placed. For instance, smoking with an implant will increase your risk for gum disease and oral cancer. If you smoke while your mouth is healing from having an implant placed, your body may reject it and your mouth won’t heal as quickly as it could. You’ll also need to brush and floss your implant regularly like you would your other teeth.
