Brushing your teeth twice a day is a great way to deeply clean your smile and boost your oral health. However, brushing is only beneficial if you know how to properly brush. So, to help you make sure you’re brushing your teeth correctly, our James D. Schuette. DDS. team recommends that you use the following three steps:

Step 1: Start your brushing routine by holding your brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Then, use short, tooth-wide strokes and gently move the brush back and forth across your teeth.  

Step 2: Make sure to brush the entire tooth enamel of each tooth, including the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. To clean the inside of the tooth, hold the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

Step 3: Brush your tongue when you are done brushing your teeth. Doing so will remove bacteria and freshen the breath.

If you do these things, you will get the most out of brushing. In addition to these tips, Dr. James D. Schuette recommends brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It’s also best to use oral hygiene tools that have been approved by the American Dental Association. That way you know they’re safe and effective. Your dentist also recommends flossing and rinsing at least once a day.
